This was my first long video created a couple of years ago and while a lot of this information is still very applicable, I have changed my approach to some extent and another season or two of shooting game me more insights, experiences and much better images that aren't a part of this video.
What 12 frames per second looks like in a sequence. Its not as many frames as people generally assume. ..This is a sequence of photos from a touchdown play that I posted a few weeks ago. This was shot with a 400mm lens from the back of the end zone. It was a 60 yard pass and the wide receiver caught it around the 5 yard line if I remember correctly. I didn't have time to switch to my 70-200mm as the ball was already in the air once I spotted the potential receiver. Canon 1DX, 400mm 2.8 # f3.2, 2000 shutter, 1600 ISO. Rain game...
For those of us who photograph outdoor sports (90 percent of us I imagine) eventually you will end up photographing subjects in hazy or extremely backlit situations which can really wash out your image detail and color. I normally hear people suggesting the use of higher contrast but in my experience that often exacerbates the issue and also hides detail. I have found the increasing the blacks can help bring back both the detail, shape and color of photos taken in this kind of lighting. Heres a short video of a not so interesting photo that I adjusted simply by increasing the blacks and then editing it like I would any other photo. Notice how the photo was effected by the contrast increase as opposed to adjusting the blacks in camera raw. Dehaze also works well !!
As sports photographers, we highlight and freeze detailed moments that people could witness in person or on tv but that happen too fast for the human eye or don’t give you the same viewpoint, angle, and perspective. This is a play that I happened to be fortunate enough to capture that also was captured by a videographer where I was in the tail end of the play. Captured at 12fps on the Canon 1DX, 400mm 2.8 lens @f3.2, 1000 shutter speed.
On October 30th, 2016 I photographed my first NFL football game for Vavel Photo USA. At that point in my sports photography career I had only spent 2 seasons covering high school and college football games and this was my initial entry into photographing professional sports of any kind. To be honest the experience of shooting the actual game (and even the pace) wasn't much different from the division one college football I had been covering for two seasons but the new location, new stadium, warm weather in October and meeting Warren Saap and Scott Kelby made it more than a unique experience. The fans and the crowd was awesome and the freedom to move about on the field was surprisingly open and unrestricted. The game was really competitive and the food in the media room was great. Memorable experience for a lifetime and most importantly I got some shots that I will love forever. I shot all of this video on my Iphone 6.
